The Botswana
Pathfinder’s latest extraordinary design
Bella Brodie reports
Pathfinder Homes have always been known for pushing boundaries to deliver lodges with bags of wow factor. In a marketplace where price and supply seem to have taken a priority, it’s an absolute joy to see that they have turned that to their creative advantage to deliver a jaw-dropping model and solid talking point in the lodge world.
The Botswana on was destined for Higher Charaton Park in Cornwall, a park as unique as the home with accessible plots and a tempting freehold proposition for owners.
Externally a mix of vertical and horizontal cladding contrasts with the dark grey framed windows and doors, and there’s the first clue that it’s going to be a bit different inside. Inspired by the vast and open spaces of the African earth, inside it feels authentic to that theme, delivering a chillout treehouse home vibe that is very different from anything else on the market currently. The front of the lodge has panoramic views delivered through extensive glazing – the perfect way to immerse and blend the living space with a wider park environment.
The entrance and utility area even has a low-level shower to wash muddy boots and paws and here you get the first glimpse of the infusion of colours and materials used with hand-sprayed units, integrated appliances, corian worktops and painted shutter-style internal doors. In the main living area, the ceiling is clad in light Bamboo, and the decor uses accents of teal, burnt orange and animal print. It’s a bold and intense style – not for the faint-hearted.
The kitchen is well equipped with a breakfast bar, integrated appliances and a cool pop-up extractor, stashed away bins and storage revolvers maximising corner space. Opposite that is a cozy dining zone with lowered ceilings, built-in seating with storage beneath and warm mood lighting. The living area is furnished with a comfy sofa, hand-knitted bean bags, tribal murals and sculptures, woven matting and lighting and it has a great central column with a wood-burner style fire below and the TV above. Light floods in from the front and above, making this a truly relaxing yet simultaneously uplifting space. The bathroom and en-suite shower room use striking blue tiling, brushed gold taps and fittings, and they ooze luxury. The main bathroom has a freestanding bath with Velux roof window above to enable a little stargazing although it also has a shower. The en-suite shower room has his and hers basins and a stunning double walk-in waterfall shower arrangement.
The master suite has a four-poster bed framed by monkey lights, a multi-height bamboo partition wall at its head with a storage area behind and a huge skylight above. There is a fully glazed door leading out to the garden, and plenty of floor space. The second bedroom has a bespoke, hand-built, bunk bed with a double bed below and a single bed above, making it a flexible space that will sleep three in comfort if needed. Love this home fearlessly or hate it dearly – either way, it dares to be bold and does it confidently. As the park is as unique as the lodge is, so we think it’s a perfect match!
